Phoenix Testing is a newly established independent COF (Certificate of Fitness) testing facility, founded by Nathan Gillespie in early 2024. It operates as a sister company to ‘Phoenix Haulage’, a logging transport company Nathan launched in 2020.
Phoenix Testing was born out of necessity—Nathan’s Haulage business had a significant amount of downtime within the fleet, with the distant location of the nearest NZTA COF testing facility, negatively impacting operations and efficiency.
Determined to fill this gap in the Taranaki region, Nathan applied for and received approval from the New Zealand Transport Authority (NZTA) to set up an independent testing facility. His goal was to offer reliable COF services without the downtime and travel hassles, both for his own fleet and for other operators in the region.
Project Scope:
Nathan began researching suitable equipment for his testing facility and soon discovered Levanta, a market leader in heavy vehicle workshop service equipment. After browsing the Levanta website, he contacted Jackson from Levanta NZ to discuss his specific requirements for setting up the new facility. Nathan’s primary focus was acquiring a robust truck brake testing system and other essential equipment that would streamline the COF testing process without delaying repairs and maintenance.
Key Project Components:
- SB18115 Sherpa In Ground Roller Brake Tester: This new-generation brake tester is designed for heavy vehicles, allowing accurate testing with an 18-ton capacity. Controlled by smart tablet, PC, or remote, the SB18115 integrates seamlessly with Nathan’s testing facility to deliver precise results and enhance workflow efficiency.
- SP10CLS Sherpa Pull Down System – Axle Load Simulation: Paired with the brake tester, this hydraulic pull-down system provides axle load simulation to meet COF testing requirements.
- 4 x LM65W LiftMax Mobile Column Lifts: To further support Phoenix Testing’s operations, Levanta supplied a set of four x 6.5 tonne mobile column lifts. These lifts provide the flexibility to move trucks in and out of the testing lane quickly, freeing up space for continuous COF testing while repairs and maintenance are conducted on other vehicles.
- Headlight Beam Tester: Essential for completing COF testing, the headlight tester ensures vehicles meet safety and compliance standards.
